The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
